Welcome
Dear Colleagues and Friends,
On behalf of the European Society for Clinical Investigation (ESCI) it is our great pleasure to invite you to attend the 52nd ESCI Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) to be held in Barcelona from May 30th to June 1st 2018. The congress venue will be the recently refurbished Barceló Sants Hotel Orbital meeting rooms with a characteristic modern and futuristic image, located only 500 metres from the Fira at the foot of Montjuïc.
The scientific prospects of the ASM in Barcelona are outstanding. The overarching topic of the congress is “Precision medicine for healthy ageing”. As usual from Wednesday to Friday the traditional high quality workshops on Phagocyte biology, Mitochondria, Cardiology and Hepatology & digestive diseases will provide a forum for discussion, debate and meeting of clinicians and scientists with a genuine interest in uncovering disease mechanisms in a friendly athmosphere. Cardiovascular diseases will feature particularly strongly at ESCI2018 with the Cardiology Workshop presented in connection to CIBERCV, the Spanish Network of Centers of Excellence in Cardiovascular Disease, of the Health Institute Carlos III. Obesity will be also strongly imbricated in the programme in collaboration with the CIBEROBN, the Spanish Network of Centers of Excellence in Obesity & Nutrition of the Health Institute Carlos III. Nutrition will focus a great deal of attention by the PrediMed researchers of CIBEROBN in collaboration with colleagues from the Harvard School of Public Health in the “Omics: advances, applications and translation in nutrition & epidemiology” and the “Precision nutrition” Workshops. Additionally, the Hepato-Gastroenterology & Lipids Workshop will be carried out in connection with the CIBEREHD, the Spanish Network of Centers of Excellence Hepatology & Digestive Diseases also belonging to the Health Institute Carlos III. Undoubtedly, these incorporations will provide novel and very timely topics for discussion and interaction between participants.
Not surprisingly, ESCI is returning to Barcelona, one of the oldest and most emblematic cities of Europe located in a beautiful spot by the Mediterranean Sea surrounded by mountain ridges and valleys, where a very successful ASM was hosted back in 2001. Carthaginians were apparently the original founders of the city in their way to fight the Roman Empire, although it was the Romans who formally established the colony of Barcino during the reign of Emperor Augustus (27 BC – 14 AD). Excellencies of social and city life in Barcelona, well known for its trendy, cosmopolitan, and cool character, do not need much advertising. Whether it is by unearthing Barcelona’s past in the hidden courtyards of the Gothic Quarter, or by enjoying the charms of the modernist city, you will discover an elegant city, famous for its impressive history, culture, monuments, fantastic architecture, museums, arts, science and plentiful other interesting things that make Barcelona one of the world’s most livable, spectacular and energetic cities.
We hope that you will actively contribute to the overall and scientific success of the meeting by presenting your work and sharing your knowledge with us. We will be waiting for you with open arms and minds at the ESCI2018.
Look forward to meeting you all in Barcelona!
