Dear Colleagues
We are pleased to invite you to join the 36th Annual Scientific Meeting of ESCI which will take place in Brussels, Belgium, 10-13 April 2002.
The ESCI Annual Meeting provides a multidisciplinary forum for scientists engaged in studies of basic mechanisms of molecular biology and pathophysiology as well as in clinical and therapeutic trials.
For the third time, an ESCI Postgraduate Course on Molecular Biology : “Functional Genomics”, organized by Bruno Fouqueray, Paris, France, preceeds the scientific meeting in Brussels.
Brussels was founded in 979 and became the capital of Belgium in 1830. Brussels is also one of the three federalist regions of Belgium and the capital of the European Community. It heads the largest economy block of the world. Brussels is called “the company town” for European Government. In this city of art and culture, you will also enjoy the charm of downtown with its old houses, pubs, typical cafes and restaurants. Brussels, indeed Belgium, is renowned for its culinary excellence, from the typical Flemish and Walloon food to the cuisine from virtually every corner of the world. Who hasn’t heard of our Belgian beer (more than 500 varieties) or tasted our incomparable chocolates?
I hope that you will actively contribute to the scientific success of this meeting by presenting your work and sharing your knowledge with us. We will be waiting for you in Brussels.

Letter from the President
On behalf of the European Society for Clinical Investigation, it is my pleasure to invite you to attend the 36th Annual Meeting of the European Society for Clinical Investigation that is being held in Brussels from April 10th to 13th, 2002. We will meet in the “capital” of Europe, a nice and cosmopolitan city.
We have a very interesting programme with 20 workshops and subspeciality sessions. The outstanding workshops presented in this programme are additionally complemented with highly rated speakers for the Plenary Sessions. I invite you to present your work, either in abstracts to workshops or to subspeciality sessions, and attend the 2002-ESCI meeting. It is a unique opportunity to participate in a meeting where discussion, on single topics, is vertebrated from basic to clinic within the same sessions. As such ESCI was a pioneer in bridging the gap between bench- and bed-side work, in bringing close together complementary, and sometimes divorced, areas of basic and translational research in medicine.
Patrick Evrard, a former Councillor of ESCI, is the President of the Local Organizing Committee. We want to thank him and the rest of the Members of the Local Organizing Committee for their work toward the preparation of a scientifically outstanding and surely successful ESCI-2002 Congress.

Poster Awards: the four best posters (including workshop posters) will be awarded the Poster Award 2002 to the amount of EUR250 per poster.
