44th Annual Scientific Meeting of the
European Society for Clinical Investigation

Bari, Italy
24 – 27 February 2010

Dear Colleagues,

It is a great pleasure to invite you to join us at the 44th Annual Meeting of the European Society for Clinical Investigation (ESCI) which will take place at the University Medical School in the history-laden city of Bari, Italy, on 24 – 27 February 2010.

ESCI was founded in 1967 and is a truly interdisciplinary association of clinicians and basic scientists across Europe working to integrate the different aspects of biomedical research. In the official journal of the society, the European Journal of Clinical Investigation, studies can be published, performed from bench-to-bedside and vice versa, including animal studies relevant to human health and disease. I have no doubt that your dedication to sound Science and the need to share the latest results will make the Bari meeting a major success, with the highest standards in research to turn Science into Medicine. During the three working days planned at the large and central university hospital “Policlinico” and in the Aula Magna, several topics will be addressed by well-known international scientists dealing with the mechanisms of molecular, cellular, endocrine, gastroenterological aspects and their consequences for growth, inflammation, metabolic regulation, and atherosclerosis. Workshops, plenary lectures, and poster exhibitions will guarantee a highly integrated approach throughout the congress dealing also with key aspects on methodology of research. Best contributions in the field of clinical investigation will be acknowledged by poster awards, ESCI awards and the prestigious Albert Struyvenberg Medal 2010. For young scientists from the new European countries, ESCI provides special membership fees and travel grants to attend the annual meeting where it is our aim to pool bench to bedside researchers to focus on the different integrated aspects of Science. Further details are available at www.esci.eu.com.

Bari (from Greek Báριον – Bárion, Latin Barium, coordinates 41°08’N 16°52’E) is the charming capital city of Apulia, a region in southern-east Italy bordering the Adriatic sea. Bari is laden with very rich history and culture gained from Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, Swabians, Spanish, French, and Italians. The city is well known for its port and its University, established in 1924. Always considered to be the Italian gateway to the East (the Levant), Bari serves as an ideal bridge between West and the East cultures. In addition to several museums, Bari boasts very important monuments including the Castello Svevo (Swabian Castle) of Frederick II of Hohenstaufen (the Holy Roman emperor), the Basilica of Saint Nicholas (the saint patron of the city), a splendid example of the Apulian Romanesque Churches scattered throughout the region, and an important pilgrimage site for the devout throughout Europe and the Christian world, the Petruzzelli Theatre and the “Russian” Church. The Old Bari and the Murattiano district are the heart of the city and offer a beautiful promenade on the sea. The recently redeveloped Karol Wojtyla Airport has several connections to major European cities.

I look forward to welcoming you all to Bari, in the heart of the Mediterranean Region, and to celebrate together 44 years of commitment to doing research!
